Challenge

Functional computers are still discarded while schools, civil-society organisations and vulnerable groups continue to face barriers to affordable digital access.

Solution

REQ combines circular ICT refurbishment with social redistribution and digital tracking across the full lifecycle of devices. The project creates a closed-loop system for collecting, repairing, refurbishing and redistributing laptops and desktop computers, while recovering reusable components and ensuring responsible recycling of materials that can no longer be used. Potential routes for scale-up include refurbishment hubs, partnerships with municipalities and civil-society organisations, and corporate donation or CSR programmes.

Impact

REQ extends the useful life of ICT equipment by prioritising reuse, repair and component recovery before material recycling. At the same time, the model supports digital inclusion by redirecting functional devices towards people and organisations that may otherwise struggle to access affordable technology. By combining circular resource management with social impact, REQ demonstrates how ICT refurbishment can reduce electronic waste while creating additional value for communities.

Repair and refurbishment before recycling: Reuse first
Devices kept in productive use longer: ICT
Digital inclusion integrated with e-waste reduction: Social + circular
