Challenge
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is lightweight but bulky, making it costly to transport and difficult to recover efficiently in island regions with limited local treatment capacity.
Solution
ISLOPOL creates a circular EPS system tailored to island conditions by combining smart collection, affordable edge AI, interoperable data infrastructure and local remanufacturing. The project uses low-cost AI vision to support sorting, FIWARE-based traceability to monitor material flows, and local processing to transform recovered EPS into products such as lightweight concrete and insulation boards. The model is designed to keep more material within the regional economy while also creating sensing, integration and traceability solutions that can be replicated in other islands and remote regions.
Impact
ISLOPOL aims to keep suitable EPS in Madeira instead of exporting it for treatment, while replacing virgin feedstock in locally manufactured products. At scale, the project estimates that the model could avoid more than 600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year. By combining local recovery with digital monitoring and new manufacturing applications, ISLOPOL shows how island regions can build more resilient circular-material systems and reduce dependence on long-distance waste treatment.
